In order to ensure global peace and security in the wake of the Second World War’s devastating impacts, the United Nations (UN) was established in 1945. The UN tries to avert conflicts, promotes peace between parties engaged in conflict, sends out peacekeepers, and fosters conditions conducive to maintaining peace. The UN Security Council’s main duty is to maintain peace and security.

Security Council

Its responsibility is to identify any acts of hostility or threats to the peace. It establishes connections with disputing parties to peacefully resolve the disagreement and offers solutions. To preserve and re-establish global peace and security, they are allowed to implement enforcement measures including international military intervention and economic sanctions.

General Assembly

The General Assembly is the UN’s policy-making and representative body, and it offers Member States forums where they can air their grievances and reach agreements on contentious issues. They discuss it with the Security Council while also making recommendations on how to maintain peace and security through disarmament. If the Security Council doesn’t perform its duties, it has the authority to intervene.

Secretary-General

Any urgent issues that jeopardize global peace and security are brought to the Security Council’s attention by the Secretary-General. It takes action to stop international disputes from starting or becoming out of hand while maintaining impartiality and integrity. Preventive diplomacy and preventive disarmament are the conflict prevention tactics that the UN has embraced to stop conflicts from escalating and recurring.
