The northern end of Marine Drive has the Girgaon Chowpatty and the adjacent part links to the Nariman Point which is at the southernmost tip whereas the Malabar Hill and Babulnath are to the northern tip. Marine Drive is on reclaimed land which faces west-south-west and the Back Bay is a part of Arabian Sea.

The bay behind the city got the name Back Bay because initially the City of Bombay was a small township around Fort St. George of the former Portuguese Casa da Orta. It faced the harbour, known as Front Bay and so the bay behind the city is Back Bay.
