The global pandemic has put us all in very trying times and we are desperately trying to cope up from it. We are slowly getting accustomed to following all the necessary COVID rules and living our lives with making minimum physical contact with others. We are now making it a habit to wear masks, wash our hands regularly and sanitise almost everything we begin from outside. While we are doing this, we all need to understand the real meaning of social distancing. We need to comprehend the fact that social distancing does not mean we have to be ignorant or avoid talking to our relatives. We should understand how to maintain social distancing without being rude.

In reality, we should even be using the term social distancing to keep a distance from each other. We should call it physical distancing. The term social distancing literally means to avoid contact or talking with anyone by any means possible. Physical distancing is the term we should be using to keep a distance of 2 meters from each other. What will be your first reaction if you find out your neighbour is positive with coronavirus? Will you stop contacting them? Will you leave them alone without any assistance? If you do so, you will be following social impudence and not social distancing.

Instead of avoiding or ignoring your neighbours, you can follow the covid guidelines and try to help them. You can drop food by their door and let them know over a phone call. You can buy groceries for them and leave it at their doorstep just like food delivery. These little acts of help can be life-saving for them. While considering our safety is important, maintain relations with others is important as well. If not physical help, you can at the very least provide them with emotional help over the phone or video call. Treat your daily vendors and workers with respect and not like a carrier of any virus. We can only overcome this pandemic if we maintain physical distancing and build a strong social network at the same time. So, starting today, maintain physical distancing instead of social distancing.
