Dogs can recognize the emotions behind an expression on a human face. For instance, if a dog turns his head to the left, it could be showing that someone is angry, frightened, or happy. If there is a look of shock and surprise on a person’s face, dogs tend to turn their head to the right side.

Even the heart rates of dogs go up when they see someone who is having a bad day. One of the recent research revealed how dogs are connected with people. The study also gives evidence that dogs use different portions of their brains to process human emotions.

Studies have indicated that the dog’s brain can pick up on emotional signals contained in a person’s voice, body odor, and behavior, and they can read their faces. According to the study, the researchers showed a group of 26 dogs, some photos of a human face showing six basic human emotions, which are, anger, fear, happiness, sorrow, surprise, and disgust.

When dogs were shown expressions like anger, fear, and happiness, their heartbeat started raising. The dogs’ raised heart rate revealed that in these cases they encountered higher levels of stress. Also, the dogs tended to turn their heads to the left when they saw human faces expressing anger, fear, or happiness.

The opposite happened when the faces looked surprised, probably because dogs view it as a non-threatening, relieved expression. These results, therefore, show that dogs do understand human emotions.

By living in close contact with humans, dogs have acquired particular skills that allow them to interact and communicate efficiently with people.
