So, how does one go about being completely authentic? Here are five pointers to get you started.

Do not tell lies

Being real is fundamentally about being completely honest with ourselves. But most of us were not raised to tell the truth; rather, we were raised to please others. We were taught that white lies are perfectly acceptable. We were taught to act, pretend, and be pleasant. However, pretending, even if it is for the sake of protecting someone else, is a sort of lying.

However, you do not always express the truth.

There is a significant difference between living your truth and always speaking your opinion. In many cases, speaking your truth is neither required nor desirable. It’s not always polite to express your feelings. But that doesn’t give you license to lie. You can still “be yourself” if you keep your mouth shut.

Allow your body to guide you to what is true for you.

It might be difficult to know who we are and what we want at times. Fortunately, our bodies always recognize what we are feeling, even when we aren’t aware of it. Try paying attention to the signals your body is sending you right now. Say something completely false aloud, ideally to someone else. “I enjoy it when my boss humiliates me in front of my team,” or “I enjoy suffering the stomach sickness.” Then pay attention to how your body reacts to the statement.

Accept your flaws, even your tough feelings.

“Being you” is not the same as “being perfect” or “being the best version of yourself.” We are all human, which means we are frequently untidy, raw, and incorrect. When we just love the elements of ourselves that we think are good, strong, or smart, we reject the qualities that make us unique. This sets us up for insincerity. We start suppressing what is true and flaunting what is sparkling, yet our apparent perfection is a ruse. The only thing we can do with our flaws is to accept them with forgiveness and compassion.
