Feminism is a combination of social, political movements, and ideology aimed at defining and establishing gender equality in politics, economics, personal life, and social life. But have you heard of the concept of pick me feminism? A ‘pick me.’ is a lady who uses qualities that are commonly valued by males and uses them to her advantage to impress and attract men. Author Farida D has defined what ‘Pick-me Feminism’ is on the basis of the concept of “pick-me girl.”

According to Farida D, “Pick-me Feminism” is the feminism that does not disrupt the patriarchal structure and instead attempts to be accepted by it. The author gives an example of how it promises to liberate women but instead adapts them into the male culture to explain the concept of ‘Pick-Me Feminism better.’ Pick me feminism is a key tenet of white feminism, which takes a “pick me” strategy to combat patriarchy.

According to author Farida D, ‘pick-me feminism’ manifests itself in three ways within ‘white feminism’.

1) According to the author, invisibility is a superpower used by white feminism. It gets along well with the patriarchy instead of attempting to overthrow the system. It rather integrates within the existing power structures. One way it does this is by removing women’s rights that challenge the patriarchal system. As a result, white feminism, like patriarchy, has no room for intersectionality.

2) When white feminists try to be intersectional, they develop a white savior complex. Because the white savior feminists make their decisions based on white ideals, there is no room for choice. Hijab, domestic work, or anything else that is a key concern for marginalized disabled or poor women’s identities are not among the options. It’s a symbol of patriarchal power systems since it’s predicated on the idea that males are better at making decisions about women’s bodies than women are. It demonstrates how white women are the experts on women’s rights in this instance.

3) White feminism focuses on the idea that women can have it all. But in reality, white women can have anything a white man has as long as they stick to the patriarchy’s definition of femininity. Women will be humiliated if they choose one over the other, that is if they choose work over family or vice versa.
