Gibraltar is a small British colony on Spain’s southern coast, covering only 2.6 square miles. Despite its small size, it is home to one of the world’s most extreme airports. A major roadway bisects the runway of Gibraltar International Airport, which is located near the territory’s northern border with Spain.
The major road into and out of Gibraltar is the four-lane Winston Churchill Boulevard. The road must close every time a jet takes off or lands, resulting in one of the world’s most bizarre airport traffic patterns, as well as extreme traffic. Although Gibraltar’s airport is small, with only around 11 flights per day in 2015, the road can nevertheless be closed for up to two hours each day, causing traffic jams all around town and up to the Spanish border.
The territory’s tourism industry is expanding, and more airlines are flying in and out of the airport. As aviation and road traffic has increased in recent years, there has been increasing pressure to develop a roadway that does not intersect an active runway for safety and convenience. The new road would run beneath the runway, providing a clear path for planes to take off and land.
Gibraltar International Airport is, without a doubt, the most peculiar airport in southern Europe. While the runway isn’t particularly difficult to land on, it does have a unique design characteristic that could make it unsafe. Winston Churchill Avenue, the city’s major thoroughfare, runs parallel to the runway and must be closed when a jet has to land.
Although there is a stoplight on the road signalling automobiles to come to a halt, the airport has had several close calls throughout its history. The short runway also suddenly terminates at the water on both ends, forcing pilots to come to a complete stop right after landing.
