Changing eras and cultures have been well depicted in Hindi films over the decades, whether it’s the tremendous shift in the professions to which women are exposed or the domestic abuses that women of today have stood up to.

From Meena Kumari to Vidya Balan, from Mother India to Lipstick Under My Burkha, women in Hindi cinema have played a key role in conveying the country’s evolution. We’ve compiled a list of five films that feature strong female characters.

1. Mother India (1957).

Mother India is a famous Indian film from the early years of the industry. It was a game-changing film at the time. It’s widely regarded as one of Nargis Dutt’s most memorable and iconic performances. Radha, played by Nargis, is a poor peasant who struggles against all obstacles to raise her two sons. The locals regard her as the embodiment of justice and a god-like character. For the sake of justice, she kills her immoral son, adhering to her convictions.

2. Astitva (2000).

Astitva, directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, exposes Indian society’s masculine chauvinist culture. It brings to light concerns such as extramarital affairs and spousal abuse that are prevalent in society but are rarely discussed. This film is about Tabu’s character Aditi Shrikant Pandit, who is seeking to find her own identity outside of her marriage, and she eventually goes away from her husband and son, aided by her to-be daughter-in-law Namrata Shirodkar, who also quits her chauvinist lover.

3. Bandit Queen (1994).

The film is a biography based on the life of an Indian dacoit, Phoolan Devi, who was imprisoned in 1983 and is played by Seema Biswas. The Indian police charged her but instead made her into a folk hero. It’s the narrative of a lady who fights all the mayhem perpetrated on her by males, from cops to gangsters. She eventually triumphs over them all and emerges as a strong lady. Shekhar Kapoor directed the film, which was based on Mala Sen’s biography, India’s Bandit Queen: The True Story of Phoolan Devi.

4. Kahaani (2012).
