Most of us will have had this feeling at some point in our lives: your heart skips a beat when you see your partner enter the room, and it seems as though your time together makes the world go ’round. Many individuals aspire to be in love since it is an important aspect of life.

There are several varieties of love. When they’re enamored with someone special, some individuals experience butterflies; happy couples who have been married for a long time have a deep, profound attachment to each other; and parents’ love for their children is frequently regarded as the deepest love a person can feel. But in romance, love and being in love are two distinct things that depend on the stage of your relationship.

If you’re wondering what the distinction between being in love and loving someone else is, clinical psychologist Randi Gunther, Ph.D., marital therapist Kathy McCoy, Ph.D., and romance and relationship specialist Theresa E. DiDonato, Ph.D., have agreed to explain it to you.

According to DiDonato, “the spark that characterizes a “love-at-first-sight” experience is more accurately defined as a powerful attraction followed by a readiness for a long-term commitment. Romantic love is more complex and includes behavioral, cognitive, and emotional elements. Additionally, it is not something that often occurs immediately but rather develops over time.”

“One significant difference has to do with your feelings if you’re asking what it means to be in love. In particular, when you fall in love with someone, you have a powerful, almost imperceptible longing for that person,” says DiDonato

“Love has a lasting effect on people. You will always care about the person you love, no matter how irritating or disappointing they are to you or how far you go from them. It contributes to the fact that you can continue to love your ex even after a breakup since loving someone else is entrenched in you,” says DiDonato.
