Various startups have succeeded in not only making a fortune but also changing the face of business. The sad reality of startups is that nine out of ten fails, often quietly and unnoticed! The remaining startup is successful due to its process’s originality and inventiveness. Zoho is an example of a company that grew from humble beginnings in a modest flat in Chennai’s outskirts.

Over the last two decades, Zoho has established itself as a market leader in web-based business solutions, offering a single cloud platform with all necessary applications for running a business wholly in the cloud. Zoho is headquartered in California and employs 4000 people.

Vembu and Tony Thomas launched the company in 1996, and it now has seven sites, including a worldwide headquarters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, and a corporate headquarters in Pleasanton, California.

Sridhar Vembu recognized that socialism was India’s fundamental problem, and he sought to eliminate it. Two years later, he decided to follow his brother, quit his job, and return to his home country to use technology to alleviate the country’s problems. They teamed up with Tony Thomas, a veteran in the field who had some network administration software. They founded Vembu software in a modest flat in Chennai in 1996, which later evolved into Zoho.

Except for minor investment from family and friends, Zoho’s business has been self-funded from its inception. Initially, Tony served as the company’s CEO and chairman, while Sridhar focused on marketing and promotion of the technology that was being sold, and began approaching clients in the Bay region because there were a number of networking companies starting up in the Bay Area.

Zoho quickly started gaining clients. Cisco was their first client. Their program began to sell nicely over time. They offered its software to Silicon Valley firms, as well as expanding their business in Japan

In 2009, the company was renamed ZOHO Corporation. Sridhar Vembu and his family own a whopping 88 percent of ZOHO. ZOHO currently has over 50 million users all around the world. In Austin, Texas, the software company has taken over a 375-acre complex. ZOHO University is a subsidiary of ZOHO Corporation.

ZOHO is a web-based online office suite that includes invoicing, note-taking, web conferencing, wikis, word spreadsheets, presentations, databases, project management, and much more.

With solutions that compete with Salesforce.com, Microsoft, and Google’s cloud, Zoho has achieved global notoriety, and they’ve done it all while remaining based in India and without any outside capital.
