Indian parents and their obsession with seeing their kids become an engineer or doctor is no new news for us. They make us believe that there is no brighter future than engineers. Almost all such parents lack the vision of letting their child pursue his dreams and not theirs. Engineering is not a field that provides opportunities anymore, unlike one or two decades ago when engineers were in high demand. The world is developing new technologies and only engineers can do that. But nowadays it is difficult to find a high-minded engineer. Here are some reasons why engineering fields lack scope –

  1. A rapid change in technology – This fast-moving world also upgrades all the technology. Hence it becomes mandatory for the engineer to keep up with the pace. If not, be ready to work under a young inexperienced senior who passed out gaining all the necessary advancements.
  2. Lack of jobs – This is a major problem in selecting the engineering field. IIT, India’s finest engineering college was unable to place at least 30% of its engineers. If this doesn’t scare you nothing will.
  3. Settle for a minor job – Since it becomes difficult to get a job, you settle for a low paid job that has nothing to do with your education. Top of the class graduates are working in call centres just to get a slow salary on something is better than nothing logic.
  4. Academically difficult – It’s no doubt that this field is difficult to study and pass. Studying engineering requires detailed knowledge of science and maths. That’s not all. To be a well-trained engineer you have to be curious and innovative.

If we talked about different sections of engineering, there is still scope for chemical engineers, electrical engineers and IT engineers. If you think you have enough interest in engineering and possess a talent to think innovatively, only then should you opt for engineering. The world doesn’t need any more engineers. Hope this answers your questions and doubts.
