Cities have a profound impact on who we become. Cities have their own distinct personalities and peculiarities, just like people do. They develop from within and around us, just like many individuals do. Can cities, however, influence how we view art, how we make things, and how we immerse ourselves in the frustrating creative process? At Homegrown, we were interested in learning how the city had influenced these artists’ identities and how their work reflected this influence.

In the first in a series, home grown spoke with 3 artists from Chandigarh to get their opinions on how the artistic community there has influenced their bodies of work and molded their creativity.

1. Aayushi Bansal, 24

“I frequently travel for work, but going back to my hometown always seems like going back to a haven of comfort. For me, it’s more akin to slipping into your favorite pajamas after a long day at work. It’s better to arrive late than never to return to your home, as the saying goes.”

2. Farheen Fatima, 28

“I was born and raised in several different locations, but Chandigarh was the first place I lived for ten years. It will always be the first city I ever named home for me. My perceptions, observations, and creations have been greatly influenced by Chandigarh and the way the city feels. My own aesthetic has been influenced by this city’s subdued simplicity and symmetrical beauty.”

3. Sagal Singh, 25

“Ghar; (Home). In a manner that words cannot adequately express the effects that this location has had on my life. Wish it were a location. Since I can remember, I’ve considered my head like a place, and every location has felt like home.”
