Sleepiness and tiredness after eating is a reaction of the body to chemical changes at the time of digestion. Sleepiness after eating is normal and it occurs to everyone. All these hormones boost the levels of blood sugar, which creates a feeling of fullness and produces insulin that will stream through cell tissues and deliver energy for the cells. During all this process the brain release serotonin which leads to sleepiness.

Food also impacts melatonin generation in the brain. Melatonin is the hormone that is accountable for sleepiness after meals. Melatonin is produced by restoring the amino acid tryptophan into serotonin, which then results in melatonin.

There are several foods that activate more drowsiness than others. Foods that are abundant in protein, for eg. meat, eggs, fish, spinach, cheese, poultry, and soybeans comprise tryptophan amino acids.

This amino acid is utilized by the body to generate serotonin, which is accountable for sleepiness. Also, foods comprising carbohydrates enable the production of serotonin and tryptophan amino acids which are found in the brain. This is why you feel like sleeping after eating.

And most importantly overeating can also result in sleepiness.
