An unusual behavior that occurs while you are asleep or just waking up is parasomnia and it is often referred to as sleep drunkenness. It is a causal term of confusional arousal. In simple terms, it is a sleep disorder. It is a feeling of sudden action or reflex upon waking up.

Confusional arousal is a condition of sleep inertia that takes place when your brain transitions between sleeping and waking up. The brain fails to make the transition to wakefulness when you are sleep drunk. It means that your body can get up, walk and talk but your mind is not completely awake.

According to experts, people who have confusional arousal are often confused and have a problem sleeping. This sleep drunkenness can last for a few minutes to an hour and can affect people of all age groups.

When your friends or partner tells you that you have acted in a certain way while waking up and if you do not remember that episode, then it’s sleep drunkenness. Occasional drunkenness should be of no concern. However, if you are experiencing it at least once a week, then you need to schedule an appointment with your doctor.
