Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD) is one of group conditions called cluster A or eccentric personality disorders. The behaviour of people with such disorders is considered to be odd or unusual to others.

Paranoia is one the essential characteristics of people with Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD). People with this disorder have a relentless lack of trust in others and are suspicious of others without any appropriate reasons. People with this disorder believe that others want to harm them.

This disorder appears to be more common in men than women. It mainly begins in childhood or early adolescents. Such people find it difficult to confide in other people. They bear grudges or find it threatening even in the most innocent comments. They are easily angered and feel hostile towards others.

Causes and risk factors

It is believed by researchers that various combinations of biological and environmental factors lead to paranoid personality disorder. Early childhood traumas are another factor.

Other contributors are:

· Living in a low-income group household.

· Separation or a divorce.

· Being a widow.

· Never being married.

People with PPD do not think that their behaviour is extraordinary. They think it is rational to be suspicious about others. They also tend to behave in a stubborn way. Their sarcastic self invokes hostile responses from others.

They doubt others’ loyalty, have trouble working with others and are hypersensitive to criticism. The treatment of paranoid personality disorder can be a challenge because these people lack trust and have an intense sense of suspicion.
