How often do we leave home in haste without being properly hydrated? You may not notice any difference but it is still affecting the inside of your body. The human body comprises of about 6o% water, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need more water. This common fluid, scientifically named as H2O is important for almost every organ in our body. Let us see some important reasons to be hydrated sufficiently: –

  1. It helps produce saliva. Water is the main ingredient in the saliva and hence it is very crucial for proper food digestion.
  2. We release sweat when we feel warm. Our body maintains the optimum body temperature using this sweat and hence it requires water to do so.
  3. Athletes who go through higher physical strain must be sufficiently hydrated all the time. It improves physical capacity and gives you more endurance.
  4. If your body is prone to prolonged dehydration, you may experience seizures and low blood pressure. In extreme cases, this may even lead to a gradual death.
  5. It helps release body waste and toxins through processes like urination, perspiration and defecation. Proper water intake helps kidneys filter the waste properly from the blood.
  6. Drinking a glass of water 40mins before and after eating food and improve the digestion process. Do not drink water while eating as it may unsettle digestion and you may experience acidity.
  7. It improves the oxygen flow in the blood and helps carry crucial nutrients to the blood.
  8. It prevents us from having urinary tract infections and keep kidneys healthy. You may experience discomfort or burning sensation while peeing when you are dehydrated.
  9. Hydration makes your skin looks wrinkle-free and healthy. It promotes the production of a protein called collagen that promotes skin, muscles, bone and tendons growth.

An average human must consume about 2.5 to 3 litres of water every day. If you are involved in more physical activities than others, you should drink more water. For your convenience carry a water bottle along with you all the time. There are many apps available on our phones to keep track of our daily intake of water and to remind us to hydrate ourselves.
