A charley horse is a muscle spasm, which occurs when a muscle contracts quickly and without warning. Cramping can occur in any part of your body. Your legs are prone to them. Charley horses are more common in infants, athletes, and adults, cigarette smokers and obese adults who are taking specific medications.

Because of poor circulation in their legs, obese people are more likely to have Charley horses.

Treatment

The underlying cause of Charley horses affects the treatment. Simple stretches and massages can assist, relax and stop a charley horse from contracting if it’s caused by exercise.

An ice pack can assist numb the discomfort while heating pads can help speed up the relaxation process. If your muscle is still sore after a spasm, your doctor may prescribe ibuprofen or another nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

Antispasmodic medicine may be prescribed by your doctor if the symptoms are severe. Physical therapy can also help you deal with muscle spasms and keep them from getting worse.

Your doctor may suggest surgery in extreme circumstances.
