Recognize your self-defeating behaviors.

Make a mental note of every time you hear that nagging negative voice in your head. It’s more likely to happen at difficult moments when you’re feeling overwhelmed and under-resourced by the challenges you’re dealing with. You may revert to this negative narrative because it is familiar and comfortable to you. However, it can impede you from finding a solution to your situation, preventing you from feeling pleased. Spend a day or two listening to your ideas and examining the emotions and behaviors that accompany them.

Get rid of the idea that struggling is desirable or appealing.

Understand that being at peace with yourself and content with your situation does not imply that you aren’t working hard and overcoming obstacles to get where you are. Stop believing that being continually stressed and busy is the only way to be successful. Recognize that all work and no recreation will almost certainly make you unhappy and prevent you from enjoying what you’ve worked so hard for: your family, yourself, and your happiness. Understand that being drained and anxious all of the time does not imply that you are doing better than others at this “life” thing.

Recognize that limiting oneself is not beneficial to anyone.

Recognize that not everyone can be happy at the same moment, and that is just fine. You may be unhappy because you are succeeding while many around you are struggling, and you may wish to stop feeling this way, but your sadness will not make others happy. Denying oneself joy does not imply that others will do so as well.

Believe in yourself and your capacity to be happy.

Stop being so hard on yourself and recognize that telling yourself you don’t deserve happiness is a form of bullying. It’s neither admirable nor humble to repeatedly tell yourself that you don’t deserve that promotion or that new significant other. Instead, be patient, kind, empathic, and forgiving with yourself, and learn to love yourself as you would others.
