When you initially get the urge to meditate, it usually comes from a good place inside. It’s the kind of urge you want to stoke into a raging fire. Why? Because regular meditation allows you to access the peaceful, silent source of your own mind.

And the truth is that most of us are rarely aware of the mind’s deeper currents. We lose heart and give up because we identify with the lively and fast-moving surface. You can stop yourself from quitting if you understand why you want to. And, maybe more crucially, you can begin to identify with your true self.

1. We are uncertain about what to expect

It’s not always clear what you should be doing when you first start meditating. It can be really confusing if you don’t have a guide or a teacher to help you. Meditation, you see, entails being alone with yourself. With the mobility of your own mind and thoughts, you learn how to be easy.

2. Meditation isn’t about having a good time

Most of us aren’t used to sitting around doing anything while our minds race. Meditation, you see, doesn’t feel like anything. When you meditate, you can have a million different experiences. But it isn’t the point. The goal is to be calm and comfortable in the face of everything.

3. We believe that our minds should be silent.

This is a tremendous blunder. Your mind works like a machine, spitting out ideas like confetti at a ticker-tape parade. It makes no difference what your mind is doing. That’s one of the most difficult things to adjust to, but once you do, your practice will take on a new dimension.

4. Your mind is constantly wandering

Yes, your thoughts will stray. Again and again. The lovely thing about it is that meditation is essentially just the process of returning your attention to your focused meditation topic. In a single session, you might do that 1,000 times.

5. We fail to be inspired

Keeping at it is one of the most crucial things you can do to succeed. Continue to practice. You must develop a meditation practice. When the inspiration fades, it’s the regular and continuous practice that helps you progress.
