The first 3D printed steel bridge of the world has finally been inaugurated in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The idea of this 3D printed steel bridge was formulated and made by Joris Laarman lab and the production was done by the Dutch company MX3D which was supported by Imperial College London.
The construction of this bridge is indeed fantastic and this structural achievement will operate as a living laboratory for the researchers so the researchers can evaluate on how the other complex architectural work can be achieved in future.
The bridge that weighs 4.9 tons and is 12 meters long was constructed with the assistance of four industrial robots and it involved six months of printing.
It required four years of hard work and evaluation before they could commence with the building of the bridge. Welding torches were used by the robots to deposit the printed layers of the bridge. The enormous structure was transported from Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal in Amsterdam’s Red Light District.
On July 15th 2021, it was inaugurated by a robot. This 3D printed stainless steel bridge is a milestone considering the fact that there has never been such a structure that could handle the pedestrian traffic. This 3D printed bridge is also a data hub as it has a wide network of sensors installed on it.
The sensors function in detecting the changes that occur in the bridge over its lifetime and it can also see the public’s interaction with this 3D infrastructure. It has now been made accessible to pedestrians and cyclists after Queen Maxima of Netherlands unveiled it.
