Only a few historical structures exist around the world that connect mythological and historical notions. Adam’s Bridge, also called Ram Setu, is one of these structures. The bridge is almost 50 kilometers long in all. The Gulf of Mannar is also separated from the Palk Strait by Adam’s Bridge. The sea around this structure is quite shallow, with depths varying from three to thirty feet.
The bridge remained totally above sea level until 1480, according to many scientific accounts, when it was devastated by a cyclone that hit the area. Until the channel deepened, it was navigable on foot.
Author Valmiki mentions a bridge across the ocean between India and Sri Lanka in the classic Indian epic Ramayana, which was written thousands of years ago. He tells the story of Rama, the celestial prince, and his fight to reclaim his abducted bride Sita from Sri Lanka’s demon king Ravana.
Ram Setu, also known as Adam’s Bridge, is a causeway that connects Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu to Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. Rama gathered a monkey army and led them to Sri Lanka, where a long conflict erupted.
Lord Rama’s Vanara Sena is thought to have built the bridge on Nala’s orders so that Lord Ram could reach Lanka and rescue his bride Sita. The bridge was created using floating stones with Lord Rama’s name carved on them, making it unsinkable, according to mythology. Lord Rama is said to have prayed to the ocean for a way to get from India to Lanka so that he may save Sita from Ravana, the Lankan ruler.
