The term Ghoomar comes from the term ‘ghoomna’ means pirouetting or spinning about, which is how it got its name. A group of women perform the dance while wearing a veil on their heads and dressed in traditional attire. The women maintain the speed with exquisite and elegant gestures such as pirouettes, finger-snapping, beating palms, and other hand and foot movements.
Ghoomna, which features women twirling about as the ghagra provides a whirling motion, is a trademark step that everyone performs. Some Ghoomar artists dance with brass pitchers or earthen pots on their heads or utilize fire lamps to perform this traditional dance. The dance is fascinating to witness because of the women’s synchronized moves and whirling colorful costumes.
The stunning and colorful costumes are one characteristic that may contribute to the long-term appeal of this traditional dance form. Ghagra and choli embellished with mirrors, crystals, stones, or threadwork are the most common garments worn by women while performing Ghoomar. Women also wear extensive jewelry and accessories, in addition to extravagant traditional attire.
