Physically punishing children have been normalised and accepted in all settings whether it be in a family, school or institutions meant for care and protection of children such as orphanages, hostels and others of the like.
It is considered necessary to discipline children and make them competent and responsible.
But many people fail to notice how physical punishment may affect them psychologically and emotionally.
Following are the side effects of physical punishment;
Hitting children makes them believe that it is acceptable behaviour. It builds aggression in them and in later years it comes out in various negative forms.
It develops destructive behaviour, vandalism, increased aggression, poor school achievements, phobias, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and other severe issues that scar the children and their future.
Constant punishments may harm a child’s sense of self. He may feel unsafe at places meant for his protection and development.
When dealing with any arguments or small conflicts, physically punished children adopt aggressive or violent strategies to resolve any conflict with their friends or siblings. They do not consider it as a violation of their rights.
Physical punishments from parents can make the child distance himself from his parents. They might constantly feel threatened by them.
Physical punishment makes the child think hitting or any physical abuse is acceptable and hence, when they start their own family they abuse their partners and kids.
