Shift work is a type of work where a certain task is handled in shifts by several sets of the crew working in shift relay, which prevails how the work gets 24 hours disclosure and coverage. For specific time-sensitive tasks, such methods are helpful in terms of the employer’s viewpoints.

For the worker, it can mean freedom and comfort. However, it can possess several negative effects too. Most of the terrible effects on employees are associated with health. So here are some benefits and drawbacks of Working in Shifts.

Pros of shift working

1. Convenience

Employees are eligible to select the shift according to their desires. An individual who wants to take care of a home can opt for the night shift and an individual who is available in the morning can opt for morning shifts. At the same time, it is helpful when it comes to taking leave.

If you wish to finalize some other work you can do it in the morning and go for an evening shift. You can do the work according to your convenience

2. No restriction of pushing hours for weekend

Working in shifts can be beneficial for finishing other duties and not saving them for the weekends. For regular hour employees, it is difficult to do other things during the day as a maximum of their time is acquired by office hours.
On the other hand, workers have a lot of extra time to run errands other than work hours and they do not require to wait for the weekends.

3. Flexibility

One can wish to take a break on any day of the week and make it up for work somewhere else. It is manageable as one can exchange shifts with colleagues too. You can take a holiday in the midweek and compensate for it later.

Several elements of one work can be dealt with by rotational crews which increases and results in full productivity.

Cons of shift working

1. Abnormal routine

The habit of getting up in the morning, leaving to work, then having lunch by afternoon, and leaving from the workplace by evening is not the same for shift workers.

Night shift employees feel bored and lazy as they do not accomplish an adequate amount of sleep during the daytime. Even the eating schedule shifts for the night shift workers. Shift workers come across several schedule differences as per shift change thus they are completely separated from social life.

2. Shift inequality

Many times shifts are based on seniority. The superiors receive the best slot like the day shift and the rest workers get night and evening. Hence there is no scope for development as every shift crew is in their world.

3. Low productivity

In rotational shifts, one may receive very limited sleep. One might have shifted the set of shifts which makes him more sleepy and exhausted. This will accordingly lessen the worker’s efficiency and competence to function.
