Dental Surgeon Vs. Dentist: Know The Difference

Dentists are dental health specialists who serve the majority of people at some point in their lives. Dental surgeons also give dental treatment to patients, but they visit patients who require dental surgery to correct their issues. Dentists and dental surgeons are medical specialists who care for their patient’s oral health.

Dentists examine and monitor their patients’ dental health regularly. They repair dental problems like cavities and may also teach their patients how to enhance their oral health. Patients with abnormalities or other dental health disorders are seen by dental surgeons. They operate on the individuals they encounter to correct specific dental problems.

Dentist

Dentists are professionals who treat patients’ teeth. Other mouth-related health issues, such as gum disease, may be addressed as well. Dentists work largely at dental offices/clinics and work primarily during the day, with some evening and weekend shifts. Dentists are vulnerable to communicable diseases, thus they must work in sterile conditions and wear protective gear. Their employment requires them to stand and bend while treating patients. They must be licensed and hold a Doctor of Dentistry degree.

Dentists have the following responsibilities:

• Patients’ dental health should be discussed.

• Analyze whether x-rays are required.

• Cavities should be addressed.

• Patients can have dentures made.

• Medications should be prescribed.

• Patients should be referred to a dentist or another professional.

Dental surgeon

Dental surgeons must hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and a specialty license. A residence is a requirement as part of their education. They must work in sterile surroundings in medical institutions and may be asked to stand for extended periods since they perform surgery on patients. They also require outstanding fine motor skills as surgeons, as they must be extremely accurate while making incisions and mending patients.

A dental surgeon’s tasks include the following:

• Examining the dental records of patients

• Identifying and diagnosing patients’ dental problems
