The Queen’s Gambit is a Netflix original drama set during the Cold War. The story follows Beth Harmon, an orphaned chess prodigy on a mission to become the best chess player in the world, as she battles addiction.
The tug-of-war between improvising and understanding the history of other great players is one of Harmon’s toughest chess challenges. Harmon’s game is at its best when she can move seamlessly between styles, grasping the formal components but also allowing herself to improvise or try something new.
Similarly, it is critical for entrepreneurs to be adaptable. Have a written plan and a set of objectives in mind. At the same time, knowing when to improvise is critical to survive in the fast-paced business world.
Harmon demonstrates that being told “no” or losing doesn’t mean you’re doomed for life. Sometimes the timing is just off. When beginning a business, you’ll be told “no” hundreds of times, but keep believing in yourself, and when the dust settles, you could just convert your doubters into believers.
Harmon was able to outsmart her opponents by combining intuition and strategy.
In the business world, using your intuition isn’t generally taught as a strategy. However, making decisions based on research and hard effort isn’t the only way to achieve success. We tend to reject our inner direction when we are focused on obtaining success in our business. Using your intuition can be just as effective.
There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all strategy for reaching success. The greatest way is to keep an open mind to intuitive inspiration.
