What Is PTSD & How To Prevent It

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with trauma. Each person moves at their own pace and is ready to face grief and suffering in their own way. Unfortunately, there is no way to speed up the healing process after a traumatic event. However, the good news is that emotional anguish always becomes less intense over time. Exposure to severe traumatic events may lead to PTSD. It is crucial to understand the distinction between PTSD and the trauma experience. A traumatic incident is a one-time occurrence, but PTSD is a long-term disorder characterized by flashbacks and re-enactment of the traumatic experience. In addition, there must be a substantial level of continuous anguish and life impairment to meet the criteria for PTSD. So what is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that can affect people who have been threatened with death, sexual violence, or serious injury, or who have experienced or witnessed a distressing event such as a natural disaster, a fatal accident, a terrorist attack, war/combat, or sexual assault. PTSD can occur to anyone irrespective of ethnicity, caste, etc.

Here are a few ways to prevent trauma from becoming PTSD

1) Maintaining contact with and receiving support from important individuals in your life are essential.

2) Notifying loved ones about the trauma

3) Choosing to identify as a survivor rather than a victim.

4) Positive mood and laughter are used.

5) Finding positive meaning in a traumatic experience.

6) Believing that you can control your emotions and deal
