Symptoms & Traits Of Sensitive People

HSPs have different characteristics that may be mistaken for symptoms but may not necessarily indicate a condition. The following are examples (Aron, 2010):

Whether it’s joy or sadness, pleasure or pain, HSPs experience everything more fully and intensely than others.

Because of their high sensitivity, HSPs enjoy the basic joys of life, making them low-maintenance and easy to please.

HSPs require significantly more leisure than others, like silence, and prefer a slower pace of life. This means that taking the time to unwind and reflect on their experiences is critical to their well-being.

Due to the amount of information processing necessary, including doing a comprehensive risk assessment and proceeding with care, HSPs take longer to make judgments than others.

Change can be difficult for HSPs. Because of the overstimulation created by new experiences, even positive change can cause high degrees of excitement and anxiety at the same time.

HSPs may struggle to deal with conflict and criticism because they have high standards of themselves and are harsh on themselves when they fall short. Additional criticism from others can be overpowering.

HSPs have a richer inner life than less sensitive persons, being more self-aware, creative, and intuitive. This is likely to entice people to pursue a spiritual path, particularly contemplative techniques such as meditation. They also have a strong appreciation for the visual and performing arts, such as painting, dance, and music.

HSPs are more likely to avoid the unpleasant overarousal generated by violent films and news coverage, which can be physically harmful to them.

In new or tense situations, HSPs’ propensity to overstimulation can cause them to withdraw. This might make them appear shy or unsociable, even though many of them are extroverts who simply require more alone time to digest information.

Because of their high levels of empathy, HSPs prefer a tight social circle full of love and support, which they return in spades. Allowing another person into your life takes time, but once an HSP becomes your friend, they will stick by you through thick and bad.
