The term bowel cancer refers to cancer that starts in the large intestine. Bowel cancer is sometimes known as colon or rectal cancer, depending on where cancer develops. Bowel cancer is found at the lower end of the digestive tract.

The inner lining of the colon is where bowel cancer starts. As per reports, the polyps on the intestinal wall are the most common cause of this condition. The majority of polyps are benign, but some polyps can progress to malignancy.

Bowel cancer can spread to the lymph nodes if left untreated. According to Disease Council reports, if cancer spreads to other organs such as the liver or lungs, it might lead to death.

Signs and symptoms

1. A long-term alteration in bowel habits that causes people to go to the bathroom.

Diarrhea, constipation, or smaller, more frequent stool movements are all signs of a change in bowel behavior.

3. An alteration in the appearance of feces.

4. You might feel full or might experience bloating in the abdomen or a weird sensation in the rectum, which occurs frequently during bowel movements.

5. Gaining weight for no apparent reason.

6. Anal or rectal pain, an enlargement of the rectum or anus.

7. A low red blood cell count that causes fatigue and weakness.

Treatment

Depending on where the cancer is located in your gut and how far it has progressed, bowel cancer can be treated with a mix of treatments.

The following are the main treatments:

1. Surgery- The cancerous part of the colon is extracted through surgery. It is the most effective treatment for bowel cancer and is all that many individuals require.

2. Chemotherapy- This is a treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Radiation is used to kill cancer cells in radiotherapy.

3. Biological therapies- They are a novel form of drug that improves the efficacy of chemotherapy while also preventing cancer from spreading.

The likelihood of a complete cure, as with most cancers, is determined by how far it has progressed by the time it is identified.
