On each side of your chest, the rib cage is made up of six pairs of bones. The organs inside the thoracic cavity, such as the lungs and heart, are protected by this bony structure. You may experience pain under your ribs from time to time, which can be uncomfortable. The right lung, liver, gallbladder, right kidney, and part of the colon are all located on the right side of your chest and upper abdomen.

These organs are frequently the source of pain in this area.

1. Right lung

The ribs, muscles, and tissues protect the right lung, which is located on the right side of your chest cavity. Pain in the right side under the ribs can result from any condition that affects these structures.

Pleuritis, or inflammation of the pleura is a common condition that causes pain in this location. It can cause stabbing pain in the lower ribs’ area. Deep breathing and coughing may make the pain worse. Right lung pain can be caused by pneumonia, pneumothorax, tuberculosis, and other types of lung infection, as well as pleural effusion, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

2. Liver

The liver is located directly below the rib cage in the right upper abdomen.

Trauma to the upper right abdominal wall, such as a blunt or sharp injury, is one of the many reasons for liver pain.

Bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections of the liver, alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease, pyogenic liver, liver cancer, liver cysts, intrahepatic cholestasis, and hepatic arterial occlusion are some of the additional illnesses that affect the liver.

3. Kidney

The kidney is located behind the liver, more towards the right side. Kidney stones, pyelonephritis (kidney infection), renal bleeding, hydronephrosis, and polycystic kidney disease are among the many reasons for pain in the kidney.

4. Gallbladder

The gallbladder can be found in the right upper abdomen, beneath the liver. Gallstones, cholecystitis, cholangitis, and gallbladder cancer, which can cause obstruction and pain in the right side under the ribcage, are some of the causes of pain affecting the gallbladder.

5. Colon

Diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disorders, infectious colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, colonic polyps, trapped gas, faecal impaction, and colorectal cancer can cause pain in the right rib cage.

6. Other causes

Broken ribs in the right side of the chest can cause pain in the right side under the ribs, which can occur as a result of an accident, repetitive trauma, or sports-related activities.

Costochondritis, or inflammation of the rib cage’s tissues and muscles, is the most prevalent cause of pain around the ribs. Coughing due to viral infections may be the cause.

Right rib cage pain can be caused by hormonal changes during pregnancy, as well as an expanding uterus and breasts.

A stitch or a strong discomfort under the right rib cage can result while running. This could be caused by dehydration, overeating, or irregular breathing.
