A stroke, also known as a brain attack, happens when the blood flow to a portion of the brain is cut off or diminished, depriving the brain’s tissues of oxygen and nutrition. As a result, the brain cells start to degenerate in a matter of minutes, which can cause permanent brain damage, chronic incapacity, or even death. World Stroke Day is commemorated annually on October 29 in order to raise awareness of the illness, its prevention, and treatment, and to provide improved care and support for survivors.

Lethargic lifestyles and genetic diseases have significantly raised the risk of stroke in patients, according to Dr. Rajnish Kumar, HOD and Senior Consultant, Neurology, Paras Hospitals, He says, “Stroke often arises from a shortage of oxygen, but are we aware of all the factors that might cause this oxygen deficiency? People sacrifice their lives by consuming fried, contaminated meals that are inexpensively accessible on the market and by spending endless amounts of time on computers or mobile devices.”

He emphasized that stroke is the fifth most common cause of disability and the fourth most common cause of death in India. Did you know that illnesses like diabetes and hypertension can also raise your risk of stroke in addition to the previously stated factors?

According to Dr. Dhruv Zutshi, Senior Consultant, Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, diabetes and hypertension are the two top causes of stroke globally.
