Cancer can develop anywhere in the body. Blood cancer however, develops in the bone marrow which is a soft fatty cavity of the bone where the blood is being produced. It is the most prevalent type of cancer.
In blood cancer, the functions and productions of blood cells are affected as it begins from the bone marrow itself. The growth of normal blood cells are disrupted by the growth of the abnormal type of blood cells.
There are three types of blood cancer – Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma.
Leukaemia is generally found in children whereas lymphoma in the people who fall in the age group of 16 to 24 years. As per Indus Health reports, 31% of males suffer from leukaemia in comparison to females.
· Fever or chills
· Coughing or chest pain
· Infections
· Weight loss
· Pain in bones or joints
· Painless lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin
· Continuous tiredness or fatigue
· Enlargement of lymph nodes.
· Bleeding gums
· Loss of appetite or nausea
· Night sweats
· Shortness of breath
· Dark spots and fine rashes
The cancer care centre care team conducts tests to identify the type and stage of your blood cancer. In staging, it tells you the severity and spread of the cancer. Both diagnosis and staging occur at the same time.
Various tests and methods to diagnose blood cancers includes:
· Blood tests
· Examination of bone marrow
· Diagnostic image tests such as CT scan, PET scan and X-ray
· Physical exam
· Surgical lymph node removal
