Tonsils are the two lymph nodes found on each side of the back of your throat. They work as a defense mechanism and help avoid your body from getting a disease or infection. But when tonsils become infected, the condition is called tonsillitis. Tonsillitis can happen at any age and is a common childhood infection. It’s most often diagnosed in children from the age of preschool through their mid-teens.

There are 3 types of tonsillitis, acute, chronic, and recurrent.

If symptoms last for 10 days or less, it is considered acute tonsillitis. If symptoms last longer, or if tonsillitis comes back numerous times during the year, it can be chronic or recurrent tonsillitis.

An extremely sore throat, problem or irritation while swallowing, rough sounding voice, bad breath, fever, earache, stomach pains, headaches, a stiff jaw and neck tenderness from swollen lymph nodes, tonsils that seem red and swollen, tonsils that have white or yellow spots this can be possible symptoms of tonsillitis.

In very young children, you may also observe increased irritability, poor appetite, or unnecessary drooling. A mild case of tonsillitis doesn’t necessarily need treatment, particularly if a virus, such as a cold, causes it.

Treatments for more serious cases of tonsillitis may comprise antibiotics or a tonsillectomy. People who encounter chronic tonsillitis may begin to experience obstructive sleep apnea. This occurs when the airways swell and prohibit a person from sleeping well, which can lead to other medical issues if it is left untreated. To lower your risk of getting tonsillitis, stay away from people who have infections of the tonsil and If you have tonsillitis, try to be away from others until you’re no longer infectious.
