We’ve probably all heard the advice to believe in yourself, appreciate yourself, be your own cheerleader, and that you can’t truly love others until you love yourself—and it’s all true. Having a strong sense of self-esteem is important to living a happy and successful life.

It’s crucial to understand what self-esteem is in order to have strong self-esteem. To begin with, regard entails adoration and respect.

Self-esteem entails not only appreciating yourself but also treating yourself with love, value, dignity, and respect. Positive self-esteem also entails trusting in your abilities to learn, succeed and contribute to the world as well as your independence.

High self-esteem is a mindset that allows you to appreciate your accomplishments, confront your flaws, and feel good about yourself and your life. Because you value, trust, and respect yourself at your core, it allows you to put daily ups and downs in perspective.

High self-esteem also allows you to see that nothing is about you, allowing you to avoid taking things personally and reacting inappropriately. You can see beyond yourself and be confident in your place in the world when you have a strong sense of self-esteem.

You are less likely to place undue focus, blame, self-doubt or weight on the aspects of your life that you are unhappy with if you have higher self-esteem. You are more capable of dealing with stress, worry, and pressure from school, work, home, or peers.

Rather than feeling hopeless, stuck, or unworthy as a result of any perceived “failings,” a person with high self-esteem is more inclined to look for ways to change or improve rather than feeling like a “failure” or despair.
