The advantages of meditation are well-known. How it aids in the attainment of a clearer mind, increased focus, improved sleep, improved health, and pleasure. When you initially get the urge to meditate, it usually comes from a good place inside. Because regular meditation allows you to access the peaceful, silent source of your own mind.

When we try to meditate, however, we discover that it is far from simple. When you sit down to meditate on that cushion or chair, your once-normal human brain becomes a whirlpool of thoughts. But isn’t the purpose of meditation to cleanse your mind and focus your attention?

And when this happens, the very first thing that comes to our mind is that we have failed at meditation. It is, nevertheless, perfectly natural. Every seasoned meditator has had the same worries about failing at meditation at some point or another.

Your brain does not readily cooperate when you sit still to stop doing and start being. Its sole purpose is to think. Our brains will organise our days, ponder about breakfast, and even have imaginary conversations. This is legendary and completely normal, but when we combine it with our expectations of clarity and happiness, we assume we are “failed” at meditation.

The truth is that most of us are rarely aware of the mind’s deeper thoughts. We lose heart and give up because we identify with the lively and fast-moving thoughts. It’s a major mistake to assume you’ve failed at meditation because your mind hasn’t calmed down. Your mind works like a machine, spitting out ideas and thoughts. It’s one of the most difficult things to adjust to, but once you do, your practise will help you excel in the art of meditation. It’s all about befriending our wandering, flawed minds.

The lovely thing about it is that meditation is essentially just the process of returning your attention to your focused meditation topic. While it’s completely normal, when these thoughts arise during meditation, acknowledge them and simply bring yourself back to your breath.
