Mindfulness can be found in many places. It’s at risk of being hailed as the panacea for all ills. Many people begin their mindfulness practice with a specific objective in mind. Less stress, better sleep, less anxiety and depression, higher attention, increased resilience, more creativity, better relationships, less pain, increased confidence, and self-esteem are just a few of the benefits. All of these can be achieved with mindfulness, but they are joyful byproducts. The purpose of mindfulness is to help you become your own best friend by getting to know yourself and gaining insight, and awareness. Slowing down allows us to get to know ourselves in all of our various colors. You can build a sense of wholeness and completeness that is uniquely yours and always available when you befriend yourself.
What matters is not what occurs to you, but how you respond to it. Outside events are beyond your control, but you have complete power over how you perceive them and how you respond to them. You can become aware of your thoughts. To notice any tendency to be judgmental or unforgiving of yourself, to be harsh on yourself in a way that your best friend would never be. You can choose to be more compassionate and understanding as your awareness grows. You can develop a new relationship with all aspects of yourself in this way.
