The fMRI revealed how mindfulness impacts various brain areas. Because consciousness and emotion are mediated by different brain regions, awareness does not need emotion. When we notice a mistake, our amygdala is automatically activated and we experience an emotional response. The prefrontal cortex is activated and the amygdala is calmed when we become aware of our reaction.
