Your father is the one person in your life who will always be a shining star in your eyes. He taught you everything from how to ride a bike to how to express yourself, and he did so with a grin and love in his heart. The teachings you can only learn from your father are some of the most important you’ll ever learn, and while they may seem natural now, you had a teacher all along.

1. Laugh at yourself

Only a true clown would ever laugh at himself in the mirror. When Dad was the first to laugh at himself, it allowed the rest of us to relax a little and stop being so afraid of being less than perfect.

2. You should never judge a book by its cover

Dads have a funny way of letting people show themselves to him rather than making snap judgments about their character after the initial handshake. Everyone deserves the opportunity to explain themselves.

3. Make a list of everything

Memory is ephemeral, and the tiny things that don’t seem important now will become very important as you become older. Keep a notebook, or simply scribble down a hilarious, pleasant conversation with a friend or loved one that you don’t want to forget. A smart father keeps boxes full of letters, journals, notes, and lists that he wishes to remember for the future.

4. The first one to become enraged loses

Nobody ever won an argument by yelling the loudest. They may believe they have, but they are delusory. Consider the moments when your father changed your mind or forced you to reexamine your choices. He was probably speaking in a calm, serious tone. A loudmouth has never altered anyone’s mind.

5. Someone is always having a bad day than you

You won’t have to search far to discover them. Simply looking about you will reveal a sea of individuals who are suffering in ways you can’t fathom. Dad was most likely the first person to point out a homeless person to you and urge you to be grateful.
