Dependent personality disorder generally begins during childhood or by the age of 29. People with DPD may think they can’t take proper care of themselves. They may have difficulty making everyday judgments, such as what to wear, or what to do, without others’ reassurance.

Family record, someone with a family member who has DPD or another anxiety illness may be more inclined to have a DPD diagnosis.

Specific cultural and religious or family attitudes, some people may acquire DPD due to cultural or religious methods that promote dependence on authority.
