Snoring happens when your airflow is restricted when you’re sleeping. Snoring loudly or for an extended period of time raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other health issues. Losing weight and avoiding alcohol before bedtime could help you stop snoring.

Prevention

1. Lose weight if you’re overweight. Overweight people may have excess tissues in their throats, which can cause snoring.

2. Sleep on your side if possible. When you lie on your back, your tongue falls backward into your throat, restricting your airway and impeding airflow partially. Sleeping on your side is a good option.

3. Raise the head of your sleep. Raising the head of your bed by 4 inches may be beneficial.

4. Make sure you get enough rest. Adults should get a minimum of seven hours of sleep each night.

5. Stop smoking. Smoking cessation can help you stop snoring while also providing a slew of other health benefits.

Treatment

1. Drugs: Cold and allergy medications help you breathe more freely by relieving nasal congestion.

2. Nasal strips – They are thin, flexible bands that adhere to the outside of your nose and keep your nasal passages open.

3. Oral appliances: Sleeping with an oral device keeps your jaw in the appropriate posture, allowing air to circulate freely. A mouthguard designed for other activities, such as sports, will not help you stop snoring.

4. LAUP (laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty): LAUP increases airflow by reducing tissue in the soft palate.

5. Radiofrequency ablation- Also known as Somnoplasty, is a treatment for shrinking extra tissue in the soft palate and tongue by using radiofrequency energy.

6. Septoplasty: A deviated septum in the nose is straightened using this treatment. By rearranging the cartilage and bone, a septoplasty increases airflow through the nose.

7. Tonsillectomy/ Adenoidectomy – The surgeon removes extra tissue from the back of the throat (tonsillectomy) or the back of the nose (adenoidectomy) (adenoidectomy).
